Dead Sea Scrolls Update – Joshua and Judges

December 4th, 2012

Group of five Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts for you all today – three of the Book of Judges (1Q6 Judges (1QJudg), 4Q49 Judgesa (4QJudga), & 4Q50 Judgesb (4QJudgb)); and the only two scrolls containing text from the Book of Joshua (4Q47 Joshuaa (4QJosha) & 4Q48 Joshuab (4QJoshb)).

There are some very interesting things contained in the two, fragmentary scrolls of the Book of Joshua. I’ll let you discover for yourselves to what I refer 🙂

Dead Sea Scrolls Update – 2 Samuel & Full Manuscripts

November 27th, 2012

It may’ve taken a while, but I’ve finally got through the transcription and comparison of the manuscript named 4Q51 Samuela (4QSama) with regards to its text of 2 Samuel, as well as the two smaller manuscripts 4Q53 Samuelc (4QSamc) and 1Q7 Samuel (1QSam). As all three manuscript contain text from 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel, I’ve also completed full manuscript transcriptions of them all.

This therefore concludes the transcription of all manuscripts containing the books of 1 & 2 Samuel, which have been collected into a handy, all-in-one downloadable RAR file available from the Downloads Page.

This also means I only have manuscripts from 16 Scriptural books from the Dead Sea Scrolls left to do!

…they do however happen to be the largest books with the largest amounts of manuscripts for each book left, not to mention the fact that I’ll also be providing transcriptions for the other books from the Dead Sea Scrolls that didn’t make it into the major “Bible Canon” (namely Enoch, Jubilees, Tobit, and Ben Sirach).

Oh well 🙂

Dead Sea Scrolls Update – 1 Samuel

September 29th, 2012

Some more Dead Sea Scrolls transcriptions for everyone today. I’ve completed the four manuscripts of the book of 1 Samuel found among the Dead Sea Scrolls: 1Q7 Samuel (1QSam), 4Q51 Samuela (4QSama), 4Q52 Samuelb (4QSamb) & 4Q53 Samuelc (4QSamc).

Thanks to these four manuscripts, at least some of the text from 30 of the 31 chapters of 1 Samuel have been preserved (missing text from chapter 13), showing us what the text of this historical book looked like over 2000 years ago.

One of the most striking things about these manuscripts are their correlations with the text of the Greek Septuagint (translated around 250-200 BCE) compared to that of the Masoretic text (produced 1000+ CE). Striking enough were these similarities/correlations of the text, that the scholars who produced The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible were led to declare the following:

These manuscripts have also helped to realign scholars’ assessments of the value of the ancient Septuagint translation. Traditionally, when the Septuagint differed from the Masoretic Text (which had been considered the Hebrew original), the Septuagint was routinely thought to be a “free” translation (or even a paraphrase, or just plain wrong). The Hebrew manuscripts of Samuel found at Qumran, however, very often agree with the Septuagint when it differs from the Masoretic Text. This demonstrates that the Septuagint was translated from a Hebrew text form similar to that of the Qumran manuscripts. The problem in assessing the Septuagint, as with so many historical documents, had been with scholars’ vision and criteria, not with the data… the important lesson here is that the Septuagint is not a free or false rendering, but rather a generally [trustworthy] translation of its Hebrew source.

Summary: the Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Tanakh actually demonstrates an older Hebrew version than the Masoretic. The problem wasn’t the Septuagint – but the Masoretic, which isn’t as close to the original Hebrew that people thought.

Downtime & Update

July 4th, 2012

First of all, my apologies for the downtime. Unfortunately, TWTY website was compromised by some malicious software, which effectively caused me to have to change webservers, and to also rebuild the website.

Thankfully, I had backups of practically everything, so now the site should be restored in full.

My apologies also to those who’ve had difficulty with the links in the Downloads page. They should now be back to full working order 🙂

I used this opportunity to change the address that the Forums were on (forum.thewaytoyahuweh.com is now http://forums.thewaytoyahuweh.com), and to also revamp the forums with a new look 🙂

Coincidentally, the downtime coincided with a new update that I was going to post up on TWTY, which I am now doing: Questioning Paul Review Part 2: The Eyewitness Accounts/The Messiah’s Words.

There will also be open discussion on this in the forum in the following thread: Forum Discussion.

TWTY Update – Dead Sea Scrolls

June 5th, 2012

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted an update to TWTY. There are a few reasons for this:

1) I moved into my own house *yay* – means I’ve had to spend time moving, sorting stuff out, and basically, spending a whole load of money I don’t particularly have on furniture, as well as household bills

2) I started a new, full-time job*yay* – this means I’ve been busy with work, not only at our office, but also at home too.

Both 1) & 2) lead to *nay* – meaning I’ve not had as much time I have had over the last couple of years to do stuff when I want to do them.

Never fear though – I’m not one to take a long break, and I’ve been continuing most of my projects here on TWTY. This first update this month is some more Dead Sea Scrolls transcriptions (woo), comprising the books of 1 & 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles (no manuscript of 1 Chronicles was found among the DSS), and proverbs. They are the following:

6Q4papKings – Containing the Books of 1 & 2 Kings (fragmentary condition)
4Q188 Chronicles – Containing the Book of 2 Chronicles (1 Chronicles not being extant on any manuscript found among the Dead Sea Scrolls)
4Q102Prova – Containing Chapters from the Book of Proverbs (fragmentary condition)
4Q103Provb – Containing Chapters from the Book of Proverbs (fragmentary condition)

As usual, these are all available from the Downloads Page, which also has a link to it to the right 🙂

Revelation: Greek-English Interlinear

November 27th, 2011

New update for TWTY today: A Greek-English Interlinear of the Greek Basis of the translation of the Book of Revelation in PDF form, all 96 pages of it 🙂

Please remember that a Greek-English Interlinear is NOT a translation, so it should not be used as such. Interlinears should only be used for looking up what a word means by itself, not necessarily how it is used in the context of the sentence that it is in 🙂

Section Complete: Greek Basis

October 29th, 2011

Something else I can cross off my to-do list.

I’ve finally completed the Greek Basis pages/pdf files for MattithYah (Matthew), Lucus (Luke) and Acts, therefore completing them all! This therefore means I have all the underlying Greek words for people to look at so they can check the translation seen here on TWTY. Consequently, I now also have the ability to make Greek-English Interlinear’s for all of the books as well 🙂

As usual, any and all PDF’s on TWTY can be downloads from the Downloads page, and quicklinks to the online webpages are on the sidebar to the right 🙂

Dead Sea Scrolls – Complete Hosea Text

September 28th, 2011

A little treat before the Feast of Trumpets (Also known as Taruw’ah): Complete transcriptions of all the manuscripts found among the Dead Sea Scrolls containing text from the book of Hosea.

This also means that all the manuscripts containing text from the Twelve Minor Prophets have been completely transcribed and uploaded onto the website, and so I’ve compiled them all into their respective manuscripts and names 🙂

Furthermore, due to the large collection of free PDF’s for download on the website, I’ve also created a new page that just contains links to all the available downloads on TWTY. Check it out here. It’s also available via the link on the sidebar to the right.

This will the last update with Dead Sea Scroll transcriptions for a while. Got a few other things on my to-do list that need doing 🙂

Dead Sea Scrolls – Complete Amos & Malachi Texts

September 20th, 2011

Dead Sea Scrolls update time again. The short book of Malachi (3 Chapters) is contained in two Dead Sea Scrolls Manuscripts – 4Q76a (4QXIIa) and 4Q78c (4QXIIc), although neither of these two manuscripts contain any text from Chapter 1 (4Q78c (4QXIIc) actually only has chapter 3 verses 6 & 7 extant, and then in fragmentary form!).

Amos however, containing 9 chapters, is a bit more complete among the Dead Sea Scrolls being contained in four manuscripts: 4Q78c (4QXIIc), 4Q82g (4QXIIg), 5Q4Amos (5QAmos) and Wadi Murabba’at (MurXII). These four manuscripts contain text from all of the 9 chapters, although not every word is extant. Nevertheless, Amos does come down to us from these 2000+ year old scrolls in a near-complete form 🙂

4Q76a/4QXIIa Malachi | 4Q78c/4QXIIc Malachi

4Q78c/4QXIIc Amos | 4Q82g/4QXIIg Amos | 5Q4Amos/5QAmos Amos | Wadi Murabba’at/MurXII Amos

Edit: For the above, please refer to the Downloads Page.
