Wadi Murabba’at Isaiah and The Way to Yahuweh Transcription Process

March 13th, 2018

Whilst I can’t exactly fathom how I missed such a Dead Sea Scrolls Manuscript (I mean, it’s not like I haven’t done transcriptions for the other Wadi Murabba’at scrolls… oh wait, yes I did!), it does however give a good opportunity to discuss the Dead Sea Scrolls and the transcription process for TWTY, using this very manuscript as an example.

Prior to 2011, the only way to see manuscripts of the Dead Sea Scrolls (which include those from Wadi Murabba’at, Wadi Sdeir, Nahal Hever etc.) would either a) be a scholar and have access to them for a scholarly article/Masters/Ph.D.; b) have a copy of one of the numerous volumes from the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series (DJD), which range from the ‘oh that’s not that expensive (£96)’, to the ‘OH MY WORD I’LL NEED TO REMORTGAGE MY BLASTED HOUSE! (£282.50)’ – you’re looking at £6,000+ for the entire collection (40 Volumes at the moment); or c) find a book about a Dead Sea Scrolls manuscript produced by a scholar, that also includes the image(s) (or facsimile as a reproduction of a manuscript is more commonly known).

Dead Sea Scrolls: Isaiah Complete & More

July 25th, 2013

Well it’s the usual time again: more Dead Sea Scrolls transcriptions!

TWTY has the final two manuscripts of Isaiah now online, plus the last three manuscripts of Jeremiah as well, bringing the total now to 31 complete books out of 38! (Remember, Esther was nowhere to be seen in the Dead Sea Scrolls – neither a manuscript of the book, nor a quotation of it anywhere in the non-Scriptural writings of the Dead Sea Sect.)

There’s also been a bit of “re-arranging” on TWTY: anything pertaining to the Renewed Covenant now appears on a collective page; anything regarding the Apocrypha or non-Canonical writings are on their own page; and there are two new sections: Septuagint and Tanakh

I’ll let you guess what the last two are in reference to 😉 (Also, there’s nothing yet on them)

Isaiah

1Q Isaiahb (1QIsab) | 4Q57 Isaiahc (4QIsac)

Jeremiah

2Q13 Jeremiah (2QJer) | 4Q70 Jeremiaha (4QJera) | 4Q72 Jeremiahc (4QJerc)

Dead Sea Scrolls – The Great Isaiah Scroll

May 8th, 2013

Quite probably the most famous Dead Sea Scroll of them all – The Great Isaiah Scroll – has now been transcribed and compared with the Masoretic text of the Lenningrad/Aleppo Codices, and uploaded onto TWTY.

Out of the 1291 verses that comprise the Book of Isaiah (Yasha’Yahu) in the Hebrew (English versions usually have 1292 verses), only 77 of the verses have not changed between The Great Isaiah Scroll and those found in the Lenningrad/Aleppo Codices that the Masoretes produced in the 11th-12th Centuries. That means that less than 6% of the verses have not changed.

If you think the Masoretes accurately copied their Hebrew texts letter by letter and word for word – think again 🙂
